In my photo essay I decided to document Portuguese culture: an immigrant’s life. I made sure to capture big themes within the culture such as religion and food. The Portuguese bakery as well as all the food depicted gives a true idea of the average Portuguese person's diet: pops, kale, fish, and chickpeas. I also included the cheese that my vavo was making at the time. Religion is a big theme in Portuguese life so I made sure I captured the church near my house as well as all the little spaces for religion within my household. I also included some images of a Portuguese neighborhood. I tried as best I could to capture the feeling of living in a Portuguese immigrant home by allowing the images to help capture the five senses. I used multiple composition techniques within my photo essay such as rule of thirds, rule of space, rule of odds, line, rhythm, and simplification. I manipulated the ISO, shutter speed, and aperture in order to fit the sunny environment that day. I used focus to make the subject of the image clear. I honestly like the images for the most part. I think they give an accurate depiction of what it is like to live in a Portuguese household in America.
